According to reports, YouTube wants to catch up with Tiktok’s popularity with its own short video format. The “shorts” feature is due to appear at the end of the year.
For a long time, YouTube was the undisputed top dog among the video platforms. But above all, specialized services are serious competition; especially the Tiktok, which specializes in ultra-short, creative clips.
Youtube now wants to follow suit and is working on a Tik Tok-like short video format called Shorts, as The Information (Paywall) reports. Shorts should not become a standalone app but should be integrated into the existing Android and iOS apps. With shorts, users can upload short videos to a feed in the app and use the music licensed from YouTube. The new feature will be launched at the end of 2020.
Tiktok has been on the market in China since 2016 and worldwide since 2018. The app broke the one billion daily user mark in just three years. No social network has ever been able to show such a pace. It is no wonder that YouTube fears for its status.
Copying successful formats is also not new to the video platform. Previously, YouTube had already adopted the successful story format on Snapchat and Instagram. Given a large number of users and YouTube’s extensive music library, an attack on Tiktok is not surprising. Before that, Google had already considered buying the Tiktok competitor Firework. Facebook also has lass already tried to copy Tiktok. With little success.
